Every October as the leaves fall from the sky and settle on the grass fields of Camp Campbell Gard in Hamilton, Ohio, AZA and BBG chapters from around KIO gather to compete. What for? Well, in a literal context, the chapters are competing for sticks. However, for the proud members of each chapter, these so-called "spirit sticks" mean so much more. The spirit sticks symbolize a whole chapter's dedication to each other. Brother to brother. Sister to sister. Winners of each years spirit stick not only compete in activities such as relay races and dodgeball as well as video making and cheering, but they strive. To win, chapters must rely on each other all while keeping a smile on their face.
spirit 2021 RECAP!
What. a. weekend. Spirit 2021 was definitely a convention to remember, and was kicked off the way KIO knows best, with amazing shabbat services! Led by Elise Varhan and Max Perry, our 67th regional Sh'lichim, these services united KIO together to be ready for a weekend full of competition. After services and grade specific ice breakers, the competition really began when our coordinators, Hayley Cole and Sam Mcgill, introduced the Spirit leadership team and got the region excited about the Olympic theme for the weekend!
After KIO kicked off the day with Saturday morning services competition's, competing in bubble soccer, tug of war, jeopardy, and more. AZA's and BBG's had the opportunity to gain points for their respective chapters by finding ducks throughout camp Combellga as the weekend progressed. Our amazing steering team led two rounds of programs, and chapters had the opportunity to continue to earn points for their chapter to win the spirit stick!! After lunch and a quick break Regional Mazkirah, Cameron Burnett led AZA as Cheerleaders while the AZA regional board coached the BBGs in powder puff football. Shuk sold a lot of new spirit wear as well! Congrats to our winners of the spirit stick, B'yachad SG BBG #43 and Heart of Ohio AZA #55. We also want to give a big congrats to all of our other award winners in the room!!
After one final breakfast together Sunday morning, BBGs and AZAs had one of the most important business meetings in KIO's history! BBGs and AZAs came togther and voted on the motion to transition to a spring region (regional election take place in the spring) to unite with the rest of the order. This was such an amazing weekend and one to remember. A huge shoutout to our coordinators, Haley Cole and Sam McGill, and our admins, Aiden Moore, Lily Goodman, Bella Maurer, Nila Rothman, and Ali Becker for leading and planning Spirit 2021!
